Born in Vatra Dornei, Romania, Virgil Scripcariu earned his bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from the National University of Arts in Bucharest in 2003, studying under the guidance of Vasile Gorduz, one of Romania’s most important sculptors of the 20th century.
Deeply influenced by his teacher’s personality and vision, the artist has embraced a sculptural language centered on the human figure. Figurative composition remains his primary means of expression and a way of reflecting on the world. His work is equally shaped by a sustained interest in the relationship between sculpture, architecture, and urban space. At the same time, he periodically creates installations that convey messages of social engagement.
In 2003, he received the Theodor Aman Scholarship, awarded by the Romanian Government for Fine Arts, and undertook research residencies in Italy, France, and Syria.
In 2007, he represented Romania at Europalia in Brussels; in 2008, he was part of the exhibition team led by Șerban Sturdza at the Venice Architecture Biennale, contributing objects and conceptual elements. He has participated in design exhibitions such as Holon, Israel (2013), and Romanian Design Week (2013–2023), and has taken part in international art fairs including Vienna Fair (2014) and Art15, London (2015). He has held solo exhibitions in Bucharest (2005, 2012, 2014, 2018, 2022), Iași (2005, 2019), London (2015), Chișinău (2021), Batalha, Portugal (2024), and Viscri (2026).
In 2023, he received the National Prize for Sculpture from the Union of Visual Artists of Romania.
Virgil Scripcariu has sculptures and design works installed in public spaces in Bucharest, Iași, Timișoara, Tulcea, and Brașov.
Since 2006, he has lived and worked with his family in Piscu, a former pottery village near Bucharest. Together with his wife, Adriana, an art historian, he has been involved in cultural and educational projects dedicated to the community, with a focus on local and national cultural heritage.
In 2021, they opened the Piscu School Museum-Workshop, a private cultural center founded by the couple. The artist developed the museum’s exhibition concept and serves as curator of its temporary contemporary art exhibitions. The entire project, which began in Piscu in 2006, received the Europa Nostra Award in 2022.
